Our culture process with cedar hedges

The neophyte can believe that the grown cedar hedge is simple to produce, it is as
easy as throwing seeds on vacant fields which will in turn be enough to raise it to the height wanted to bring it home. But you will see that it is a little more complex.

Let us start at the beginning

It is decisive to choose the right area and consider these variables. A climate that will support the growth and will not be too harsh on the chosen variety of cedar. Air quality also needs to be monitored as the cedars health will be affected by big urban centers or factories. Finally, the ground has to contain the right type of soil for the selected cedar type. If the soil is not appropriate, a quality production will not be achieved.

The choice of cedar species

If you believe that going to a nursery to choose a tree to decorate your land is complicated, it is just as hard to choose the best species to offer our customers. Since there are over 35 different species of thuyas (cedar), we must find out which is most suitable for our customers. We must first choose a cedar adapted to our region, able to survive our temperature changes, our snowfall, our icy winters and our sometimes very hot and dry summers. It is often the mistake made by retail chains stores: they order trees from other regions that are often cheaper but once transplanted on your property, they will not tolerate or survive our temperatures.

Therefore, we must choose among the species that have gone to sorting. Our selection has been made with the thuya occidentalis or commonly known as white cedar, which is the best in its class.

choix de l'espèce

First steps of life

Now that the species has been chosen, we must work on the reproduction. Whether by cuttings or seedlings, growing in greenhouses is very complex. We must ensure several crucial factors.

première pousse de vie

The origins of the seeds or cuttings:

As in humans, genetics are passed down. We must therefore ensure purity, health, strength and even the color of mother plants for optimum results.

The choice of containers, depth of the planting in these containers, the selection of soil, irrigation, fertilization, weed control, the temperature in the greenhouse and also strictly following its production schedule are all very important issues.

Now we have to prepare our fields to accommodate our babies.

It will be impossible to plant these newborns until the analysis and development of our fields is accomplished. Of course, we must begin with the weeding of the agricultural land for a clean field without weeds. After satellite photo studies, we can start by levelling our land to give it a good slope to facilitate drainage of the land. We do not want to drown our little seedlings. On the other hand, we must install an irrigation system to ensure that they are adequately watered. Since they are very young, we cannot let the upcoming icy winds of winter harm them. This will require installing windbreaks. Following the soil analysis will accurately tell us what our land is made of so we can control the pH, nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium and many other elements that are necessary for the growth of our cedars.

Maintaining them

Once planted, each cedar needs around 18 square feet to flourish in the fields. This whole area needs to be strictly controlled to help them grow.

In planning a strict timetable, it is easier to perform control tasks. It will predict the frequency of application of fertilizer for optimum growth. Weeding will have the effect of leaving the space, vitamins, soil and sunlight to our cedars. They will also need to be pruned to obtain a dense and robust foliage.

Interested in purchasing?

Once the cedars are selected for sale, two methods are practiced to bring the cedars from the field to your home.

The first method is to uproot the cedar by hand with a shovel. This does not leave much hope for the root system. We use the following method.

arracheuse de cèdres
The other method is to use a digger that will give the best chance to the root system. By using this method, the root system is at maximum protection for excellent transplantation. Once the cedar is removed, it is potted with the original soil ball to prevent it from drying out in the sun or heat. Then it is delivered to you to finally enjoy your garden in privacy.

I would like to highlight the support of these organizations, which help us day after day to provide superior quality cedar.
